Beyond The Brief: What’s Your Human Truth?

Good advertising says we need to unlock the human truth to nail the idea.

But what about our personal human truths. When work and play is blurred by an abysmal balance and workmates have become real mates, personal identity outside of adland can be non-existent.

I found myself grappling with this in my early 20’s as an overly ambitious account manager who poured her heart and soul into the work. So you can imagine the crisis that occurred two years in, when I realised suit life wasn’t for me. If I wasn’t an account manager, who the hell was I?

Easy fix! I’ll just become something else. I graduated award school and transitioned into copywriting – but after the shininess of the new job title wore off, I still felt the same.

Because my email signature carried the weight of my worth and I was so focused on nailing the human truth in the brief that I forgot about my own.

Our job title shouldn’t be our only identifier and our self worth should not be attributed to how well we’ve performed that week.

Do you have something that you love doing outside of work? Super. You don’t? Here’s your chance to discover it. Do something wild and see where it takes you. Download an ebook on rare birds and get lost in nature every Saturday. Or study the science behind tarot reading.

When you expand the mind past its regular thinking pattern, you gain powerful insight into a previously unexplored niche. And who knows, unlocking this new personal human truth could lead you to your next big idea.
