Stage 1 of Fear: Interviews

Stage 1 of Fear: Interviews

By Isabelle White.

What happens when you feel fear?

Your heart might race faster. You might sweat. You might feel butterflies in your stomach.

Our physical state of feeling fear is actually the same as feeling excitement. The only difference is what we think.

So the next time you think “shit, I’m nervous”, tell yourself “maybe, I’m actually excited.”

And what’s more exciting than job interviews? As a fellow People and Culture rep, I feel it’s only fitting to chat about this sometimes awkward, sweaty palm moment everyone will have to experience at least a few times in their life. No one can avoid it.

A lot can go through your mind: What do I wear? Do I say yes to a beverage if they offer it? How early do I arrive? Am I still relevant? Can I really do this job? To help put your mind at ease should these questions ever flood your head, I did some research. I asked some great people around me, in and outside of the industry, for advice.

Here are some of the best I was given which I now give to you.

We’re all different but I do hope these tips help you find your groove. One that has stuck with me the longest was to “go in there as if you’re trying to make a friend.”

I personally really care what people think, especially a friend, so I knew this mindset would allow me to try to be the best version of myself and not the version they may expect from me.

P.S. I bit my nails the whole time I wrote this and was extremely sweaty. We all experience fear… Or is it excitement?
